Leeds star lucky to see games this season amid Marsch admission

Daniel James arrived at Leeds United last summer in a club record deal on deadline day, and fans were excited to see what he would bring to the side.

But after 36 appearances in all competitions, the former Manchester United winger and Wales international ended the season with more yellow cards (7) than goals (4) or assists (5) for Leeds, via Transfermarkt.

Add to that his ridiculous red card at the back end of the season against Chelsea, and most fans were probably ready to wave goodbye to him once the summer transfer window re-opened in June.

No offers or interest have been reported and the 24-year-old is set to start the season as part of Jesse Marsch’s squad, but whether or not he’ll see action certainly seems up in the air.

Despite Raphinha’s mega-money exit to Barcelona opening up the right-wing position for him, his chances of regular football seem even slimmer now.

Brenden Aaronson has come into the side as a starter having worked with Marsch in the past and been a long-term target, while he showed in his debut that he definitely has the qualities to succeed in the Premier League.

Luis Sinisterra was also brought in to the club as a potential Raphinha replacement, adding plenty of depth and quality to the wide positions.

On the left you have Jack Harrison, who the club have identified as a key member of the Whites squad and they have made their stance clear despite big interest from Newcastle United that he won’t be going anywhere this season.

In addition to that the new contract that was handed out to Crysencio Summerville, and the subsequent number 10 shirt that followed, suggests that the Dutchman is firmly in the plans of the boss for the first-team this season.

James could potentially be fielded as a striker once again as he was on occasion last year in the absence of Patrick Bamford, but that seems unlikely after Marsch’s recent admissions.

Bamford is fit, Joe Gelhardt is highly-rated and just penned a new deal to tie himself to the club for the long-term, and the manager has openly admitted that the club are actively looking to sign another striker before the end of the window.

That leaves at least two players ahead of him in the pecking order in every position that he plays in. The squad has moved past the need for James, if there ever was one, and if he gets any significant amount of football this season then he should count himself lucky.
